Latin Course

Course Description

 The immortal language of Latin is an indispensable cornerstone of classical education. Students will undertake an introductory course through Latin Grammar, beginning with verbs, nouns, adverbs and adjectives to begin simple phrase and sentence translation. They will study noun declensions and verb conjugations, acquiring a wide vocabulary and a basic understanding of Latin syntax. The course uses the Memoria Press First Form Latin material.

 

Pre-requisites

 Students should possess the basic literacy expected of their age level especially reading and writing skills. As this is a comprehensive course, all concepts will be covered so no language background is required. Students should be able to commit a minimum of ten to fifteen minutes of study each weekday outside of scheduled classes in order to master the course material. This course is typically aimed at students who are in the Primary school (Grade 5+) bracket are who are embarking on their first study of the language. Students who are are older (Year 7+) should commence with this course, and will be accelerated as required.

Course Description

The course follows on from our first semester Latin course. In this course students will be commencing Second Form Latin (Memoria Press). The students will cover the first half of Second Form Latin in this course. They will complete Second Form Latin in the first semester 2024.

 

This course offers a logical and systematic approach to learning Latin grammar. Its primary goal is to enhance retention and comprehension among learners. Through a wide range of workbook exercises, students can effectively master the necessary skills and swiftly recognize key concepts. To succeed in this course, students are advised to dedicate 30-45 minutes per day. Evaluation will be based on active participation, weekly quizzes, as well as a mid-term and final exam. The class emphasizes interactivity, with students expected to actively participate and recite in the classroom. 

 

Pre-requisites

Completion of First Form Latin or the equivalent. Students from different Latin programs should see the First Form (Memoria) table of contents here for what is assumed prior to starting Second Form.
