Literature and Poetry
Description
In this semester-long course, students will undertake the study of The Trojan War, by Olivia Coolidge and Anne of Green Gables (Lucy Montgomery),as well as a selection of Australian poetry. Students will engage with new vocabulary and will study the great ideas and universal truths of these novels. This class is designed to develop reading skills, through developing annotation skills. They will complete comprehension questions and engage in socratic discussions. This class will seek to inspire students to love what is good, true and beautiful, and to enhance a student’s ability to evaluate literature. Students will be required to commit to memory poetry, and to develop their oratory skills. The grade for this course will be based on class participation (reading, comprehension questions and socratic discussion), submitted coursework questions, and a final examination.
Prerequisites
Students should be strong readers, relatively proficient with the basics of English grammar, able to construct grammatically complete sentences, and able to edit any written work.
Course Description
This course delves into the rich literary works of Charles Dickens and Elizabeth George Speare, focusing on two significant novels: "A Christmas Carol" and "The Bronze Bow." This course is designed to engage students in critical thinking, analysis, and interpretation of these timeless classics while exploring the themes, characters, and literary techniques employed by these renowned authors. This course will emphasise the pursuit of the true, the beautiful, and the good, as well as draw connections to biblical principles.
The students will develop essential skills in textual analysis, critical thinking, and literary interpretation, guided by the understanding that literature can illuminate universal truths and moral lessons. They will engage in close reading exercises, character analysis, and thematic exploration, honing their ability to identify and analyse literary devices such as symbolism, foreshadowing, and allegory. Class discussions, written assignments and poetry recitation will form the basis for their overall grade for the semester.
