Service Description

Description: Building on the foundational skills developed in the Australian Progymnasmata Commonplace course, this writing course invites students to master the classical rhetorical exercises of encomium and vituperation—compositions that praise or censure with precision and eloquence. This course explores the art of crafting expository compositions that highlight the "attendant excellencies" or flaws of subjects, including persons, things (such as abstract ideas), times (e.g., seasons), places, animals, and growing things, whether general or specific. Through a distinctly Australian lens, students will engage with topics such as conscription, the ANZAC legacy, borders and the Pax Romana, G.K. Chesterton, Emperor Nero, the virtue of perseverance, and Charlemagne. By analysing these subjects, students will hone their ability to construct compelling arguments, employ vivid rhetorical devices, and deepen their understanding of classical rhetoric in a modern Australian context. This course fosters critical thinking, persuasive writing, and an appreciation for the power of language to shape perceptions of virtue and vice. Prerequisites: The Australian Progymnasmata: Encomium and Vituperation course requires students to have completed the Australian Progymnasmata: Commonplace course or an equivalent, ensuring familiarity with foundational rhetorical and compositional techniques. Proficiency in expository writing, including clear argumentation and effective use of evidence, is essential for crafting persuasive encomia and vituperations. Additionally, students should possess critical reading skills and a basic understanding of rhetorical devices to engage effectively with the course’s diverse topics and advanced writing exercises. Required Materials: Students must purchase the Australian Progymnasmata student text from Via Classica (available from July 15). They should also have an exercise book for additional notes. Students will also need a USB headset microphone (built-in microphones also work). Students will use Microsoft Teams for online sessions. Course sessions: The course commences the week of 21 July 2025, with two one-hour sessions each week on Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:00 PM (AEDT/AEST). There will be a term break from 29 September to 10 October 2025. Classes resume the week of 13 October 2025. The final week of classes will be the week of 8 December 2025. No classes will be held on 25 August or 4 November. Instructor: Mrs. Elizabeth Matheson
