Service Description

Description: This is the continuation of this course which commence in Semester 2, 2024. It emphasises the practical and real-world application of deductive logic, using methods such as didactic teaching and Socratic dialogue. It approaches formal logic in a way ideal for dialectic students, starting with a brief history of Aristotelian logic. Students learn to translate arguments from ordinary conversations and written narratives into categorical form, construct syllogisms, and test them for validity. They also study the square of opposition and relationships of equivalence, learning to make valid propositional inferences and analyse syllogisms. Prerequisites: The Discovery of Deduction is recommended for students who have studied informal fallacies, such as those taught in The Art of Argument: An Introduction to the Informal Fallacies. However, the course does also stand on its own as an independent study of formal logic. Required Materials: If you are a new student and are taking this course midway then you will need to purchase a copy of Classical Academic Press "The Discovery of Deduction". These can be purchased at https://logosaustralis.com or christianbook.com. Students enrolled last semester will continue on with the book already purchased. Students will need a headset microphone, computer and internet. Students will use Microsoft Teams and Microsoft One Note to submit work and for live classes. Course sessions: Course sessions: This course will commence in week starting February 3. There are two one-hour sessions each week. These sessions will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 am (AEDT/AEST). There will be a term break from April 14 until April 25. Classes resume in the week commencing April 28.
