Service Description
Course Description In this semester-length course, students will undertake an in-depth study of Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift and Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, focusing on a comparative analysis of Swift’s satirical critique of human nature and Austen’s nuanced portrayal of social dynamics. Gulliver’s Travels challenges readers to confront the flaws of humanity through sharp wit and imaginative allegory, urging reflection on virtue and societal folly. Sense and Sensibility explores the delicate balance between reason and emotion, revealing the moral complexities of personal and social responsibilities. Rhetoric-level literature study in classical education hones advanced analysis, interpretation, and persuasive communication, fostering profound insights and effective discourse. Beyond engaging with these timeless texts, the course inspires students to appreciate the good, true, and beautiful aspects of literature. Memorising poetry and enhancing oratory skills are integral components, encouraging contemplation of great ideas from the past. Grades will be based on class participation (including reading, comprehension questions, and Socratic discussion), submitted coursework, and a final examination. Prerequisites Students must have a strong foundation in literary studies, proficiency in critical thinking, and the ability to articulate reasoned interpretations. Prior engagement with the basics of literary analysis is essential for success at the rhetoric level. Required Materials Students must provide their own copies of Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift and Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, as Via Classica does not stock novels. Additionally, students will need an A4 exercise book for notes, a headset microphone, and access to Microsoft Teams and Microsoft OneNote for submitting work and participating in live classes. Course Sessions The course commences the week of 21 July 2025, with two one-hour sessions each week on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:00 AM (AEDT/AEST). There will be a term break from 29 September to 10 October 2025. Classes resume the week of 13 October 2025. The final week of classes will be the week of 8 December 2025. No classes will be held on 25 August or 4 November. Instructor: Mrs Elizabeth Matheson
