Service Description

Course Description: This course invites students to study 'The Door in the Wall' by Marguerite de Angeli, set in medieval England, and 'Anne of Green Gables' by L. M. Montgomery, set in late 19th-century rural Prince Edward Island. Students will focus on character, virtue, and the moral lessons embedded in story, examining how courage, resilience, and imagination guide human action. Through careful reading, annotation, and structured written responses, students cultivate reasoning, judgment, and the skill of expressing insights with clarity, laying the foundation for eloquence and deeper understanding in the study of classical literature. Prerequisites: Students should have a strong foundation in reading comprehension, as the texts are moderately complex. They must be able to work independently and be eager to participate in class discussions. Required Materials: Students must have their own copies of 'The Door in the Wall' by Marguerite de Angeli and 'Anne of Green Gables' by L. M. Montgomery. Via Classica does not currently stock these books; they must be purchased elsewhere. Students will also need a headset microphone, an A4 exercise book for notes, and access to Microsoft Teams and Microsoft OneNote for submitting work and attending live classes. Course sessions: The course commences in Term 1 on Tuesday, 3 February, with two one-hour sessions each week: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00–2:00 PM (AEDT/AEST). Term 1 will conclude on Wednesday, 1 April. Term 2 will resume on Tuesday, 21 April, and conclude on Thursday, 25 June. Please note that there will be no classes on Thursday, 19 March. Instructor: Mrs. Elizabeth Matheson
