Literature and Poetry (Logic Stage)

Service Description

Course Description: Embark on a literary journey through the enchanting worlds of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame in this literature course designed for Years 5-8. Grounded in a classical education approach, this course emphasises logic-level analysis through close reading, Socratic discussions, and written responses. Students will explore the rich narratives and timeless themes of these beloved texts, cultivating an appreciation for the good, true, and beautiful in literature. The curriculum includes memorising poetry and developing oratory skills to foster a deep connection with the artistry of language. Marks are based on class participation (including reading, comprehension questions, and Socratic discussions), completed coursework assignments, and a final examination. Prerequisites: Students should have a strong foundation in reading comprehension, as the texts are moderately complex. They must be able to work independently and be eager to participate in class discussions. Required Materials: Students must have their own hardcopies of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Via Classica does not currently stock these books; they must be purchased elsewhere. Students will need a headset microphone, an A4 exercise book for notes, and access to Microsoft Teams and Microsoft OneNote for submitting work and attending live classes. Course sessions: The course commences the week of 21 July 2025, with two one-hour sessions each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 AM (AEDT/AEST). There will be a term break from 29 September to 10 October 2025. Classes resume the week of 13 October 2025. The final week of classes will be the week of 8 December 2025.
